What's Your Passion?

I’ve always envied those who’ve know what their passion is. My brother knew he wanted to be a doctor when he was a young boy and he is now a successful doctor.  My husband knew he wanted to be a guitarist at age 11 after hearing a recording of Paco de Lucia. He’s now a successful musician and music educator.  But, I've had doubts.

Passion My Vocal Journey

I’ve always loved music. It has always been a part of my life, personally and then professionally.  But I experienced doubt when I quit my day job to pursue music professionally . . . not just the natural fear of entering into potential financial instability.   I feared that I didn’t love it enough - that I didn’t have the ‘I have to do this or die’ passion that I had seen in other musicians.

As time went on I was able to observe what motivated me most about performing and teaching.  I found that connecting with others by sharing the depth and breadth of human emotion is what I find most meaningful about performance. It’s easy to allow the mind to fixate on sounding good, comparing yourself to others, or  ‘having chops’ (that’s definitely a musician playing for musicians conundrum).  At the end of the day what I get from performing is connection and release. . . and hopefully that is felt deeply by my audience.

Through teaching I found that I became most engaged and excited when students experienced small break throughs of perception.  When I can facilitate understanding something that once seemed intangible for someone else, however small, it lights me up ;)  I LOVE growth.  Musical growth mirrors self growth. Windows of insight into new possibilities and paths are gems. THAT’S what I feel passionate about - sharing THAT.  The knowledge that if you allow yourself the time and space to pass through unfamiliar territory, you’ll open yourself up to possibilities you didn't know were there. You are growing. You are revealing you true potential.

  • CONNECTING WITH OTHERS THROUGH SONG
  • EXPRESSING THE DEPTH OF HUMAN EMOTION THROUGH SONG
  • WITNESSING OTHERS REALIZE THEIR TRUE POTENTIAL

THAT’S what I am passionate about.  I’m still a singer, a vocal coach, and a piano teacher . . . I’m just more in tune now with how I fit into the world. Helping and connecting with others is front and center.

What do you feel passionate about?  How do you express it?
